Vesak Day 2020
Today 7th May Thursday is a Public Holiday in Singapore and Thailand. In the past, many will be happy to have extra off day. Some might have taken leave on Friday for extended holiday to somewhere out of the country. Or even better due to 1st of May which is a public holiday too, You can actually took 4 days leave and get have a long holiday of 9 days to go somewhere far away. Many would have planned way ahead like 6 months ago and booked air tickets and hotel or with travel agencies.
However all these planning suddenly gone. Labour Day becomes meaningless this year since almost the whole world is in lockdown and many are not working. As for Today, it is a day that when been enclosed in the house for too long, you are not sure of the timing and the world around us suddenly seems to have stopped. Airplanes cannot fly, hotels are empty, entertainment and tourist sites are closed almost around the world.
As for today. It is Vesak Day which commemorates Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and attainment of nirvana.
This year, the usual Vesak Day celebrations have been called off, like other religious and cultural commemorations, due to this COVID-19. Instead, some monasteries and temples, like the Singapore Buddhist Lodge, have gone digital by offering live streaming of rituals and prayers to commemorate this special day.
Nevertheless, Vesak Day is also a time for reflection, showing appreciation and doing good deeds. Although stuck at home, it is the best time to reflect our own life, there is no excuse of been too busy travelling around.
Hope we can take the time ponder and do remember all our frontline workers, healthcare personnel, public officers etc. Thank you very much for giving their all to protect and keep us safe. It is a day to remember those who had passed away due to Covid-19. R.I.P.
Wishing everyone a Blessed Vesak Day.
